# Field types

> What each kind of field looks like and how to fill it in.

Each field shows an icon on its right that tells you the type. Labels in orange are required.

## Field reference

| Field | How it looks | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| Person | Person icon, for example **Field Tech** | Nothing. It fills in with your name and you can't edit it. |
| Date | Calendar icon | Defaults to today. Tap it to pick another day. |
| Pick list | List icon, shows **Tap to Select** | Tap it and choose an item. |
| Text | **A** icon, for example **City** | Type a short answer. |
| Number | Keypad icon | Type a number. |
| Notes | Note icon, a larger box | Type longer comments. |
| Photos | **Take picture** and **Add image file** buttons | See [Photos and attachments](https://help.xforms.ai/filling-out-forms/photos.md). |
| Signature | Pen icon, shows **Tap to Sign** | See [Signatures](https://help.xforms.ai/filling-out-forms/signatures.md). |
| Data grid | Table with column headers and **Add new row** | See [Data grids and tables](https://help.xforms.ai/filling-out-forms/data-grids.md). |
| Checkbox | Appears in some grid rows, for example **Pump Head Replacement** | Select it in the row. |

## Dates

Tap a date field to open a calendar. Pick a day, using the arrows to change month, then tap **Done**. Tap **Cancel** to close the calendar without changing the date.

## Pick lists

Tap a pick list to open the **Select an Item (count)** window. Use the search box to find an item, then tap it to choose it. The window also has **Clear** and **Apply** buttons. Some lists show a **+** button.

> Some pick lists depend on earlier answers. Fill in fields from top to bottom.

## Numbers

After you leave a number field, it shows two decimal places. For example, 250 becomes 250.00.
